Winter storm Uri affected many Texas residents leaving them without electricity and water for days. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced on Monday, February 22nd tax deadline for Texas residents would be extended until June 15, 2021. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared Texas a disaster area allowing the IRS to provide tax relief to the entire state. The IRS will provide the relief automatically to any taxpayer with an IRS address on record located in the disaster area. Texas residents will not need to take any action. But taxpayers will need to contact the IRS if they receive a late filing or late payment penalty notice.
Any individual or business in the declared disaster area who suffered personal property losses not covered by insurance can include a deduction for federally declared disasters in this year’s tax return. Contact the IRS If you work outside of the disaster area but all your records to complete your tax return are located in a disaster area in the state. The IRS will be willing to work with you but you must contact them to inform them of your situation.
